Nationwide Tour with Cricketer Younis Khan

DALLAS, TX, August 26, 2019 — Baitulmaal, an international humanitarian relief organization, is launching a nationwide tour featuring record-breaking cricketer Younis Khan coming to cities from October 18 to November 5.

Younis Khan is the former captain of the Pakistan national cricket team. Younis holds the record for the most runs and the most centuries scored by a Pakistani in Test cricket history, the third Pakistani player to score 300 or more runs in an innings.

Khan is one of the handful of test batsman in the world with a century conversion ratio of over 100 percent, with 34 centuries and 33 fifties. He led Pakistan to their victory in the 2009 ICC World Twenty20, which was their first World Twenty20 title. On 23 April 2017, he became the first Pakistani and 13th ever batsmen to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket. He became the oldest and sixth fastest batsmen to reach the 10,000 run milestone in relation to innings played.

Cyclist Starts Cross-Country Ride to Raise Awareness about Crisis in Yemen

GARNET VALLEY, Pa., June 25, 2019 — Cyclist Carson Caldwell is kicking off his cross-country bike ride at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 29, 2019, at Jack King Park in Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania, to raise awareness about the humanitarian crisis in Yemen.

The bike ride is being done in association with Dallas-based Baitulmaal, which is listed in The New York Times article “Yemen’s Humanitarian Crisis: How to Help” as a highly rated charity providing emergency relief in Yemen.

Caldwell learned about the humanitarian crisis in Yemen after doing an internet search for “which countries are starving.” He said he was overcome with a sense of helplessness upon discovering the severity of the crisis.

“I really feel a sense of obligation to try to do something to help,” Caldwell said. “I believe if we all band together and unite, we can make a very meaningful difference for the children and families suffering in Yemen today.”

The New York Times is calling the situation in Yemen “the world’s worst humanitarian crisis” with 22 million Yemenis in urgent need of humanitarian aid. More than 85,000 children have already starved to death and 8 million Yemenis are on the verge of starvation. The conflict has also pushed 32 percent of its provinces into a heightened risk of falling into famine.

Caldwell plans to ride his bicycle from Pennsylvania to California with several stops along the way. He hopes to meet with supporters while raising awareness and funds for humanitarian relief. Donations will be used to send food and other humanitarian aid to people in Yemen.

50,000 People in 35 Settlements Now Have Access to Healthcare

Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian aid organization, is providing $1.6 million of aid to the support Bandiiradley Hospital, which serves about 50,000 people in 35 settlements in Somalia. Baitulmaal is also providing additional monthly funding to support costs associated with running the facility, such as salaries and administrative expenses.

The rural town of Bandiiradley is located in central Somalia. The closest hospital is approximately 70 km (43.5 miles) from Bandiiradley. With poverty widespread in the region, people without access to cars have no way to seek emergency medical care. To make matters worse, the privatization of Somalia’s healthcare system has made medical care financially inaccessible for most living in such poverty.

Since Bandiiradley Hospital opened its doors, doctors see an average of 60 or more patients per day, most of whom are pregnant women and children.

“This hospital is providing free healthcare to people who would otherwise not be able to see a doctor because of distance or cost,” said Mazen Mokhtar, Executive Director of Baitulmaal. “This can often be the difference between life and death for people in this region, and we’re thankful that our donors continue to support this and other vital programs.”

One of the items in the shipment funded by Baitulmaal is the antibiotic Doxycycline, which is used to treat bacterial infections and prevent malaria. Thanks to Baitulmaal donors, the doctors at Bandiiradley Hospital will now be able to provide about 10,000 prescriptions of this life-saving medication.

As we observe Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, we remind ourselves of the significant contributions he made to peaceful resistance against racial injustice. His philosophy, words and actions continue to inspire civil rights movements today.

In his December 11, 1964, Nobel Peace Prize lecture, Dr. King pointed out the evils of racial injustice, war and poverty. In his address he said:

“This problem of poverty is not only seen in the class division between the highly developed industrial nations and the so-called underdeveloped nations; it is seen in the great economic gaps within the rich nations themselves.”

An estimated 1 in 8 Americans are food insecure, which is roughly 40 million people. That’s 3 million more people than the entire population of Canada who lack the financial resources to consistently have food. These are our neighbors, including more than 12 million children, who need our help today.

It is in the spirit of responding to evil with good that Baitulmaal is establishing a food pantry program in America to address the ongoing problem of food insecurity in our communities. Our pilot project is already underway in Chicago.

Our vision is to have food pantries in every major city by the end of 2020, but we can only do this with your generous support.

Allah (swt) says in the Quran:

“Those will be given their reward twice for what they patiently endured and they repel evil with good, and they spend from what We have provided them.” Quran 28:54

At Baitulmaal, we work tirelessly to follow this commandment of Allah (swt) to respond to evil with good. And as the evils of poverty continue to run rampant across the world, including right here in America, we must continue to strive harder with increasing generosity.

133,200 Meals, 200 Hygiene Kits for Yemen

The United Nation’s 2018 Humanitarian Needs Overview estimates that 17.8 million Yemenis don’t know where their next meal will come from. Nearly half of those who are suffering from food insecurity are on the verge of starvation.

The decreasing availability of food and fuel is placing 32 percent of all the districts in Yemen at a heightened risk of sliding into famine. With markets and trade routes disrupted and a blockage choking off essential goods, the people of Yemen are in urgent need.

The healthcare system of Yemen has also suffered. Only 50 percent of health facilities in high-risk districts are fully functional. This is leaving mothers, children and those suffering from illness without access to doctors, medicines and other healthcare resources.

On October 14, 2018, The Ministry of Public Health and Population of Yemen reported an astonishing 1.2 million suspected cases of cholera since April. During that same time, they estimate 2,510 cholera related deaths.

Baitulmaal is working with partners on the ground in Yemen to provide urgently needed food and medicine. Currently, we are planning to send 200 food baskets containing flour, rice, sugar, beans and oil to displaced people within Yemen to alleviate food insecurity. We are also distributing 200 hygiene kits to push back against the cholera outbreak wreaking havoc on communities inside Yemen.

Baitulmaal has already sent two shipments of antibiotics, personal care items, health screening tests and other medical supplies worth an estimated $1,260,000 to help the people of Yemen — and we need to send more aid as quickly as possible!
