KABUL, AFGHANISTAN September 15, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently delivered emergency food and hygiene kits to 4,070 Afghans impacted by destructive floods in the Logar province of Afghanistan.

Approximately 370 families received aid provisions such as rice, flour, cooking oil and soap. The majority of recipients were women-headed households or families with disabled, injured, elderly or otherwise vulnerable members. Many of the families lost their homes due to heavy floods and suffered the loss of family members, livestock, crops, shops or cars.

The floods came at a time when families in Afghanistan were already strained by economic, social and political upheavals, according to Baitulmaal’s program manager, Elizabeth Sohail.

“Families were trying to do their best in such difficult times, but heavy rains washed away what little they had,” Sohail said. “We are grateful to be able to step in and help them get on firmer ground with the necessities they need to keep hunger and disease at bay.”

Afghans are being hit with multiple challenges. Climate change is causing devastating weather emergencies that disrupt access to food, clean water and shelter. In addition to deadly floods, Afghanistan was rocked by an earthquake in June that killed more than 1,000 people.

The war in Ukraine has also impacted food supplies. According to the World Food Programme, food prices in Afghanistan have risen nearly 40 percent over the last eight months. Human Rights Watch has also reported that 13,000 newborns have died from malnutrition and hunger-related diseases in Afghanistan since January, and 3.5 million children need nutritional support.

In addition to providing food and other aid, Baitulmaal has worked with the Afghan-American-founded Education and Occupation Committee (EOC) to evacuate Afghans and implement economic development projects. IBB, YEMEN July 18, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed fresh meat for 22,860 meals to impoverished families in Yemen as part of the Islamic season of Udhiyah earlier this month.

Approximately 3,412 families living in Ibb and Marib were given fresh meat from locally-sourced and humanely-slaughtered sheep and cows. Many of the families have been internally displaced due to conflict in Yemen. Recipients included families with vulnerable members such as pregnant, lactating, disabled or chronically ill individuals.

In many Muslim-majority countries, fresh meat is often procured through charitable gifts on occasions like the Udhiyah, a practice that commemorates Prophet Abraham’s sacrifice and takes place during the Hajj pilgrimage. This year, Baitulmaal distributed fresh meat for approximately 160,000 meals to beneficiaries in various poverty-stricken and conflict ridden areas of the world.

In addition to seasonal Islamic giving programs, Baitulmaal coordinates emergency aid efforts, water, hygiene and sanitation projects, orphan support programs and other humanitarian aid to under-served populations regardless of faith or nationality. KABUL, AFGHANISTAN May 17, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently delivered 500 food packages that provided 225,000 meals for impoverished families in Afghanistan during Ramadan.

More than 3,700 Afghans living in the mountainous region of Badakhshan received food packages that contained flour, sugar, oil and dates. According to Elizabeth Sohail, program director at Baitulmaal, many of the families were landless and had no income sources. Recipients included orphans, widows, amputees and the elderly.

“These families live in geographically difficult places to reach, and they were in great need of this food assistance,” Sohail said. “They were so grateful to donors who ensured that families like theirs were included in Ramadan giving.”

Baitulmaal delivered approximately 4 million meals to those in need around the world this past Ramadan. The food distribution in Afghanistan was coordinated with the local Afghan-American-founded Education and Occupation Committee (EOC). The two charities have been working together to address the needs of Afghan families in crisis. KABUL, AFGHANISTAN, Feb 4, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently provided merchant carts to 75 internally displaced families in Afghanistan to promote economic opportunities in the poverty-stricken region.

Families in the Kunduz province were provided carts and merchandise to help generate income after struggling with employment due to instability in Afghanistan. The charity prioritized vulnerable families with disabled members, young girls and pregnant women in order to help alleviate their difficulties and enable children to go to school.

According to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, the carts help improve the economic situation for more than 600 individuals.

“These mobile carts are enabling Afghans to rebuild their lives,” Sohail said. “We know of a few cases where the income earned through these carts have allowed families to open stores and improve economic activity in their neighborhoods.”

Economic empowerment projects are vital to stabilizing communities and improving security in the region, Sohail continued. They also enable children to remain in school rather than work to support their families.

Baitulmaal helped repatriate 350 families from Kabul to their hometowns after upheaval gripped Afghanistan in late August. More than 270,000 Afghans fled their homes since the beginning of the year, according to the UN. In total, over 4 million Afghans are displaced. A recent UN report estimates that 98 percent of the Afghan population will be living in poverty by the middle of 2022, up from a current poverty rate of 72 percent.

Baitulmaal has been working with the Afghan-American-founded Education and Occupation Committee (EOC) to address the immediate needs of Afghan families as well as implement long-term projects such as the merchant carts. KABUL, AFGHANISTAN, January 10, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently distributed winter aid to more than 400 impoverished families in Afghanistan ahead of the winter season.

Food and non-food items such as blankets, clothing, shoes, firewood, charcoal and soap were distributed to approximately 3,200 displaced and poor Afghans in Kabul. A majority of the recipients were women and children.

According to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, these families have been impacted by the recent unrest in Afghanistan and are attempting to reintegrate into their communities amid the instability.

“Many families returned to their homes but are struggling to keep warm and buy food,” Sohail said. “Staples such as rice, cooking oil and firewood are blessings during these difficult times.”

A recent UN report estimates that 98 percent of the Afghan population will be living in poverty by the middle of 2022, up from a current poverty rate of 72 percent. Approximately 23 million Afghans are facing extreme levels of hunger, with nearly nine million at risk of famine this year.

In addition to providing food and other aid, Baitulmaal has been working with the Afghan-American-founded Education and Occupation Committee (EOC) to evacuate Afghans and implement economic development projects.
