IDLIB, SYRIA March 17, 2023 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently completed the distribution of emergency food, water and supplies to 425 families displaced by earthquakes and flooding in northern Syria.

The distribution took place in six camps in two communities in the Maa’raat Misrin sub-district, most of which were established after the earthquakes on February 6, 2023. Families received items such as bread, clean water, sanitary napkins, infant formula and blankets.

According to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, displaced families were at risk of illness and water-borne diseases after recent floods compounded the disaster in the region.

“Families who survived the initial earthquakes were facing more and more difficulties as the days went by,” Sohail said. “Basic necessities such as clean water, baby food, and hygiene products were urgently needed in these camps, and our donors came through to ensure that these families had them as soon as possible.”

After the deadly earthquakes on February 6, 2023 in which more than 50,000 people died across Turkiye and northern Syria, ongoing aftershocks and flash floods continue to affect vulnerable families in the region. In northwest Syria, a dam collapsed causing the Orontes River to overflow and flood villages where families had relocated after the earthquakes. In this area alone, approximately 1,000 houses flooded and 7,000 people were evacuated. Across the border in Sanliurfa, Turkiye, at least 16 people have perished in flash floods according to state news agency Anadolu.

NGOs like Baitulmaal are crucial in mobilizing aid to people in need. Baitulmaal has been on the ground in northwest Syria delivering food, rebuilding schools, completing water access projects, and responding to emergencies prior to the earthquakes. Last month, $5.35M in medical aid supplies were dispatched to hospitals and clinics in Turkiye and northern Syria in addition to emergency food, heaters and tents. Baitulmaal is an international humanitarian aid organization that provides life-saving, life-sustaining and life-enriching aid to people in need around the world. With headquarters in Texas, the charity has domestic offices in California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan and New Jersey as well as international offices in Africa, South Asia and the Middle East.

GAZIANTEP, TURKIYE February 20, 2023 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed 430 heaters and firewood along with hot meals to families displaced by two powerful earthquakes that hit Turkiye and northern Syria early last week.

The distribution took place in Islahiya, Turkiye, one of the hard-hit towns in the province of Gaziantep. Most of the population is now living in tents away from cordoned-off areas full of damaged buildings and piles of rubble. Many were burning scraps to keep themselves warm in subzero temperatures, so the provision of heaters and firewood helps alleviate the cold and risk of unsafe heating methods.

Author and activist Linda Sarsour joined the Baitulmaal team on the ground in Turkiye and northern Syria, visiting with survivors, distributing aid, touring donor-funded schools, and bearing witness to the devastation of the quakes.

In an interview with TRTWorld, a Turkish public broadcast service, Sarsour called for sustainable solidarity.

“It’s not just one donation, these are people living in tents and have no idea when they’ll be able to live in permanent housing.” Sarsour said. “So the question is, will our solidarity be for one day? Is it temporary? Or are we going to stand with these people until they get back on their feet?”

One day after Sarsour returned to the United States, another powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck in Hatay, where Baitulmaal staff had just finished distributing 1,000 hot meals to survivors in Hatay and Gaziantep minutes before the ground shook. They are currently on the ground in the affected areas assessing the situation to mobilize more aid.

Sarsour is encouraging people to continue to support the efforts of humanitarian nonprofits like Baitulmaal as they rush to provide life-saving aid to those impacted by ongoing earthquakes in Turkiye and northern Syria.

Baitulmaal has been on the ground in Turkiye and northern Syria mobilizing aid to affected areas. The charity dispatched a $5.35M shipment of medical supplies which began to arrive in Kahramanmaraş, Turkiye as early as Tuesday of last week. Baitulmaal has also been regularly distributing hot meals, blankets, clothing, and shoes to displaced families and orphans. The charity is preparing to provide temporary shelters, run ambulance services and operate medical tents in the coming days. To learn more about or contribute to these efforts, visit Baitulmaal.org.

SANLIURFA, TURKIYE February 16, 2023 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed food, blankets, thermal clothing and shoes to 100 orphans and their families displaced by a series of earthquakes that hit Turkiye early last week.

The distribution took place in Sanliurfa, a Turkish city that hosts tens of thousands of Syrian refugees. Food and clothing were distributed at the Bangash Center in Sanliurfa, while blankets were delivered directly to families living in temporary shelters in the Bazar camps.

Researcher and author Dalia Mogahed joined the Baitulmaal team on the ground in Turkiye and witnessed first-hand the toll these quakes have had on residents in the area, including local humanitarian aid workers.

“The stories I heard, the resilience I saw, truly humbled me,” Mogahed said. “From the head of the relief workers who has been living in his car with his family for the past eight days while undertaking aid efforts, to the refugee woman who lost four of her adult children in the quakes and is now caring for all of her orphaned grandchildren. These are wounded healers who exemplify compassion – and who need it from us.”

Having escaped war in Syria, many Syrian families sought refuge in the ancient Turkish city of Sanliurfa – where 1 in every 4 residents is a refugee – only to be displaced once again by the deadliest earthquake in a generation. As of February 15, 2023, more than 41,000 people have perished in the quakes. Thousands of children are now orphaned, and millions of families are displaced across both countries.

Mogahed is encouraging people to support the efforts of humanitarian nonprofits like Baitulmaal as they rush to provide life-saving aid to those impacted by the earthquakes in Turkiye and Syria as well as secure donor sponsorship of orphaned children.

Baitulmaal has been on the ground in Turkiye and northern Syria mobilizing aid to affected areas. The charity dispatched a $5.35M shipment of medical supplies which began to arrive in Kahramanmaraş, Turkiye as early as Tuesday of last week. Baitulmaal has also been regularly distributing hot meals and blankets in Sanliurfa and in Jindires in northern Syria. The charity is preparing to provide winter relief kits, run ambulance services and operate medical tents in the coming days. To learn more about or contribute to these efforts, visit Baitulmaal.org.

GAZIANTEP, TURKIYE February 09, 2023 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently delivered the first two of seventeen medical supply containers valued at $5.35M to earthquake-ravaged Turkiye and Syria earlier this week, in addition to food, water and other aid to victims of the quakes.

The initial shipment arrived in Kahramanmaraş, Turkiye and included 200 hospital beds that will be used to support doctors and nurses treating the critically injured in the wake of the disaster. According to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, subsequent shipments will include essential items such as medical equipment, medical devices and triage supplies.

“The scale of this disaster is immense,” Sohail said. “But so is the compassion of donors who have rallied to support the victims of these devastating earthquakes.”

In the early hours of February 6, 2023, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck in the southern Turkish province of Kahramanmaraş. A 7.5 magnitude quake hit a few hours later, followed by numerous significant aftershocks. As of Thursday, more than 20,000 people were killed across southern Turkiye and northern Syria, with thousands more injured, missing or displaced.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 23 million people across Syria and Turkiye are likely to face the threat of a “secondary disaster” if aid does not reach them soon.

Baitulmaal has been on the ground in Turkiye and northern Syria mobilizing aid to affected areas. In addition to the $5.35M in medical supplies, Baitulmaal distributed 3,000 hot meals in Sanliurfa, Turkiye and another 5,000 hot meals in Jindires in northern Syria. It also distributed blankets to shield displaced families from the cold. The charity is preparing to provide winter relief kits, run ambulance services and operate medical tents, among other aid.

Baitulmaal regularly works in the region delivering humanitarian aid. In addition to food and winter relief, Baitulmaal also supports Uyghur and Syrian refugees in Turkiye, oversees hundreds of donor-sponsored orphans in both countries, and has reconstructed 4 schools, including a large vocational school in Ras Al-Ayn, Syria. KABUL, AFGHANISTAN September 15, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently delivered emergency food and hygiene kits to 4,070 Afghans impacted by destructive floods in the Logar province of Afghanistan.

Approximately 370 families received aid provisions such as rice, flour, cooking oil and soap. The majority of recipients were women-headed households or families with disabled, injured, elderly or otherwise vulnerable members. Many of the families lost their homes due to heavy floods and suffered the loss of family members, livestock, crops, shops or cars.

The floods came at a time when families in Afghanistan were already strained by economic, social and political upheavals, according to Baitulmaal’s program manager, Elizabeth Sohail.

“Families were trying to do their best in such difficult times, but heavy rains washed away what little they had,” Sohail said. “We are grateful to be able to step in and help them get on firmer ground with the necessities they need to keep hunger and disease at bay.”

Afghans are being hit with multiple challenges. Climate change is causing devastating weather emergencies that disrupt access to food, clean water and shelter. In addition to deadly floods, Afghanistan was rocked by an earthquake in June that killed more than 1,000 people.

The war in Ukraine has also impacted food supplies. According to the World Food Programme, food prices in Afghanistan have risen nearly 40 percent over the last eight months. Human Rights Watch has also reported that 13,000 newborns have died from malnutrition and hunger-related diseases in Afghanistan since January, and 3.5 million children need nutritional support.

In addition to providing food and other aid, Baitulmaal has worked with the Afghan-American-founded Education and Occupation Committee (EOC) to evacuate Afghans and implement economic development projects.
