DALLAS, TEXAS, September 27, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently distributed emergency aid in Del Rio, Texas, where more than 8,000 migrants fleeing violence and poverty are stranded without food, water or basic necessities.

Supplies such as first aid kits, bottled water, clothing, baby formula and diapers were collected at the Friendship West Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas, and transported to the migrant encampment under the international bridge in Del Rio, Texas, about 150 miles west of San Antonio.

According to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, there were more than 14,000 migrants in this location at one point, and those that remain are facing a growing humanitarian crisis.

“Many of these families fled unimaginable circumstances in their home countries only to be left hungry, thirsty and scared at the border,” Sohail said. “We couldn’t turn a blind eye to their suffering and responded to the call for help as quickly as we could.”

Baitulmaal joined forces with UntilFreedom, Faith for Black Lives, Relief Gang and other aid groups to provide essential supplies to families in need.

Thousands of migrants are seeking asylum from countries such as Chile, Cuba and Venezuela at the U.S. border town of Del Rio, Texas. The majority of recent arrivals have fled political upheaval, civil unrest and a devastating earthquake in Haiti that claimed more than 2,000 lives. Del Rio’s mayor declared a state of emergency last week and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has appealed to the U.S. to end asylum restrictions as migrants face long queues and squalid conditions at the border..

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN, September 16, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently evacuated and aided 350 displaced families in Kabul who fled the recent civil unrest in Afghanistan.

Baitulmaal helped transport Afghans back to their homes and provided them with food packages and hygiene kits along the route of travel. These provisions also met their immediate needs upon arrival. In addition to food and hygiene supplies, families received financial assistance to help cover their basic necessities in the coming weeks.

According to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, many families were living in limbo amid the growing crisis.

“Many Afghans wanted to return home but were worried about how they’d get back and how they’d cope once they did,” Sohail said. “Many markets were burned down and few supplies were left. Thanks to our donors, we were able to provide them with transportation, food and cash to help them rebuild their lives.”

More than 270,000 Afghans have been forced to flee their homes since the beginning of the year, according to the UN. In total, over 4 million Afghans have been displaced, accounting for the second largest displaced population in the world after Syria. Many families fled escalating violence and instability in recent weeks, seeking shelter in the main city of Kabul. They stayed in make-shift tents or slept in public parks as the tenuous situation unfolded around them. Many Afghans had no means to return to their homes and no provisions once they did return.

Baitulmaal has been working with the Afghan-American-founded Education and Occupation Committee (EOC) to address the immediate needs of Afghan families as well as implement longer term projects once more stability is achieved. More than 50 hospitals serving over 985,000 people receive aid

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.10″ min_height=”72px” custom_padding=”||0px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”]

YEMEN, September 09, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently completed the distribution of $4.6 million worth of medical supplies to support the struggling healthcare system in Yemen.

More than 50 hospitals serving a population of roughly 985,356 Yemenis in areas such as Saada, Al Jawf and Hajjah received 200 pallets of medical supplies that include essential clinical, surgical, emergency, airway, orthopedic, IV therapy and personal care kits.

Many of Yemen’s hospitals have been depleted of the necessary medical equipment and supplies required to address the healthcare needs of a population suffering high levels of malnutrition and disease outbreaks such as cholera, according to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal.

“Without basic healthcare, an illness like cholera can kill,” said Sohail. “Thanks to our donors, thousands of lives are likely going to be saved by just having the supplies that they may have otherwise gone without.”

Yemen’s humanitarian situation remains the worst in the world, according to the United Nations.  An estimated 24 million people out of a population of 29 million are in need of healthcare support, while less than half of Yemen’s healthcare facilities are still operational.

Since 2018, Baitulmaal has sent over $10.6 million in aid that provided meals, antibiotics, medical supplies, and hygiene kits to Yemen. If you would like to learn more about or contribute to the emergency aid programs at Baitulmaal, please visit their website at Baitulmaal.org.

DALLAS, August 24, 2021 — Baitulmaal, an international humanitarian aid organization, is teaming up with Dallas-based Afghanistan relief nonprofit Education and Occupation Coalition to provide emergency food and hygiene supplies to displaced Afghans who fled the recent escalation of violence.

Representatives from both organizations were planning joint education and economic development projects in Afghanistan when the violence escalated. Elizabeth Sohail, program manager for Baitulmaal, said the conversations quickly shifted to emergency aid.

“We’re seeing a lot of displaced families who are stranded far from home and unsure of what they are returning to once they get back,” Sohail said. “So we’re providing food staples, basic hygiene supplies, cash assistance and bus transportation to help them get back on their feet.”

Wafa Parwana, a director with the Education and Occupation Coalition, said the situation is dire for Afghan families who fled the fighting, explaining that “children are baked by the sun during the day and eaten by mosquitoes throughout the night.”

A donation of $180 will provide one family with the total emergency aid package of food staples, hygiene supplies, cash assistance and bus transportation. Donors can also fund different parts of the aid package as follows:

  • $50 for bus transportation
  • $60 for cash assistance for basic necessities lost during the unrest
  • $70 for up to a month’s worth of food staples and basic hygiene supplies

However, donors can give any amount to the Baitulmaal Afghanistan Aid and all funds collected will be used to provide emergency aid packages to displaced Afghan families. People interested in helping can contribute at https://birelief.org/donate.

The Education and Occupation Coalition is a humanitarian organization established to assist in the development of sustainable, grassroots programs that provide education services and income-generating projects in Afghanistan.

Rohingya Refugees Receive Emergency Assistance After Campfires

COX’S BAZAR, BANGLADESH, May 26, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently delivered emergency aid to 2,595 Rohingya displaced from shelters impacted by campfires in Bangladesh.

Approximately 519 refugee families received food packages in addition to household items such as pots and other kitchen necessities, clothing, hygiene kits, umbrellas, floor mats and tarpaulin after losing everything in a large campfire.

The fire, which broke out on March 22, 2021, at the Balukhali Rohingya camp, spread quickly through adjacent camps and caused widespread destruction. Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, said field workers mobilized quickly to assist those who were affected by the fire.

“They’ve had to cope with so much loss since being violently forced out of their homes,” Sohail said, referring to the ethnic cleansing campaigns of the Myanmar military. “Our world needs more hope and less hate, which is why our donors are helping the Rohingya.”

Over 800,000 Rohingya refugees live in overcrowded camps in Cox’s Bazar, a refugee settlement on the southern border of Bangladesh. Thousands of shelters were destroyed in the March fire, displacing its residents, injuring many and killing 15. It was the largest fire this year to date in an area where such tragedies are increasingly common. Makeshift shelters are susceptible to weather-related disasters, and the lack of proper hygiene and heating facilities puts residents at risk for disease outbreaks and accidental fires.

The Rohingya, a minority Muslim population in Myanmar, are considered to be one of the most persecuted people in the world today. UN investigators cited escalations in violence, including “killings, rapes and gang rapes, torture, forced displacement and other grave rights violations,” by predominantly Buddhist military forces that led to the massive refugee crisis in 2017. Since then, nearly a million Rohingya have fled their native Rakhine state, the majority of whom now live in refugee camps in neighboring Bangladesh. According to the UN, those who remain in Myanmar face a “serious risk that genocidal actions may occur or recur.” For those who escaped with their lives, conditions in the refugee camps are poor, with virtually all residents in need of humanitarian assistance.

In addition to emergency assistance, Baitulmaal has been on the ground in Bangladesh providing food and winter aid to Rohingya refugees. If you would like to learn more or contribute to these programs at Baitulmaal, please visit their website at Baitulmaal.org.
