ISTANBUL, TURKEY, May 5, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently delivered food staples to provide 362,520 meals to Syrian refugees living in Turkey.

Around 1,007 Syrian families were provided food packages in various locations in Turkey, including 609 families in 4 areas of Istanbul, 348 families in Urfa and 50 families in Gaziantep. The food packages contained items such as rice, sugar, beans, groats, chickpeas, tea and oil. The packages were distributed for the Ramadan season, a time marked by fasting, charity and worship.

Turkey hosts the largest refugee population in the world — most are Syrian. According to the latest figures from the UN, approximately 3.7 million Syrians sought refuge in Turkey to escape a brutal civil war and ongoing persecution. In total, there are an estimated 13.3 million displaced Syrians, which is the largest forcibly displaced population in the world.

Baitulmaal recently delivered 186,000 meals to internally displaced families in Northern Syria, and 2,211,060 meals in Lebanon, another country where Syrians have sought refuge. Baitulmaal is also delivering food to families struggling with hunger and food insecurity in other countries around the world.

BEIRUT, LEBANON, May 4, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently delivered food staples to provide 2,211,060 meals to impoverished families living in Lebanon.

Around 8,570 families struggling with food insecurity were provided food packages in various parts of Lebanon including Beirut, Tripoli, Akkar, Al Beqaa valley and Saida city. The food packages contain items such as chickpeas, rice, pasta, sugar, flour, oil, canned goods and dates and were distributed for the Ramadan season, which is marked by fasting, charity and worship.

Over 2 million of the meals were donated by a group of activists who joined forces to fundraise for Lebanon. According to Abdallah Sheik, a Dearborn-based businessman and one of the organizers of Baitulmaal’s Lebanon Committee, the declining economic situation in Lebanon has plunged people into increasing levels of poverty.

“The value of money in Lebanon went down 90%,” said Sheik. “Let’s say the minimum wage in Lebanon is $700 a month…it becomes $70. What can you do with $70? Just imagine the agony. The people in Lebanon are hungry, and they are suffering.”

In a live-streamed fundraiser on April 25, 2021, activist and author Linda Sarsour echoed his concern and called on others to stand with the people of Lebanon in their time of need.

“The bottom line is the people of Lebanon are suffering,” Sarsour said. “The people of Lebanon deserve to live with dignity. They deserve to have basic necessities like food and like medication.”

Nine months ago today, Lebanon experienced one of the most powerful non-nuclear explosions in history. The blast, which occurred in a grain factory at the port of Beirut, killed 300, injured over 6,500, and left 300,000 homeless.

At the time, Lebanon was contending with a global pandemic during a time of political and economic turmoil. Since then, food and services have become unaffordable for a majority of Lebanon’s 6.8 million residents, where prices have risen by as much as 50% and unemployment has climbed to 35%. According to the U.N., 55% of Lebanese are now living in poverty — double the number from last year.

Lebanon is also host to refugees escaping violence in their home countries. There are nearly half a million Palestinian refugees and 1.5 million Syrian refugees living in Lebanon’s increasingly crowded camps with limited resources.

Baitulmaal was on the ground in Lebanon shortly after the blast, helping to clear debris, feed the hungry, and help the homeless. Since then, Baitulmaal has also sent $1.2 million in medical supplies and hard-to-find medications to Beirut hospitals, and began reconstructing homes and buildings.

Baitulmaal provides food, water, medicine, healthcare and other aid to people in Lebanon. If you would like to learn more or contribute to these programs at Baitulmaal, please visit their website at Baitulmaal.org or donate at help4lebanon.org.

GAZA, PALESTINE, April 22, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently delivered food staples to provide 217,080 meals to impoverished families in Gaza and the West Bank, and more are currently being delivered to families struggling with hunger and food insecurity in other countries around the world.

Around 685 families suffering from extreme poverty were provided food packages so far. The food packages, which include items such as eggs, rice, pasta, cheese, oil and dates were distributed for the Ramadan season, a time marked by fasting, charity and worship.

Approximately 1.9 billion Muslims around the world observe the month of Ramadan, but many among them suffer from extreme poverty due to conflict, displacement, natural and man-made disasters, as well as other social, political and economic factors. According to the World Bank, this year saw an increase in poverty levels worldwide — the first rise in a generation of declining levels — due to the global pandemic, conflict, and climate change.

In the Gaza Strip, 1 in 3 people cannot afford nutritious food, and 80% rely on humanitarian aid, according to the UN. Beyond food insecurity, Gazans have been facing an alarming rise of coronavirus cases in the weeks leading up to Ramadan, as well as military airstrikes in the past few days, which have largely prevented families from accessing basic needs. The World Bank also warned that poverty rates will double in the West Bank due to the coronavirus pandemic and economic decline.

Baitulmaal provides food, water, medicine, healthcare and other aid to people in Palestine, and plans to deliver 3.9M meals during the 2021 Ramadan season to those in need around the world. The charity also collects and distributes zakat funds on behalf of their donors. SINDH, PAKISTAN, April 22, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently delivered food staples to provide 190,950 meals to underprivileged families in Pakistan, and more are currently being delivered to families struggling with hunger and food insecurity in other countries around the world.

Various distribution points in Pakistan provided food packages to 475 families, including the Sujawal, Tharparkar, and Noshahro Feroz districts in Sindh and the Mansehra district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.  Aid recipients included widows and underserved families impacted by historic flooding in the last year.

The food packages, which include items such as rice, flour, lentils, potatoes and oil, were distributed for the Ramadan season, a time marked by fasting, charity and worship.

Although poverty was on the decline in Pakistan over the past 15 years, Pakistani government officials expect 10 million more people to fall under the poverty line this year due to the global pandemic and national economic downturn. This will bring those living in poverty up to 60 million across Pakistan. COVID-19 was just one factor impacting families in Pakistan. Last year saw one of the worst monsoon seasons in Pakistan, which killed 400, injured hundreds more, and displaced an estimated 200,000.

Baitulmaal provides food, water, medicine, healthcare and other aid to people in Pakistan, and plans to deliver 3.9M meals during the 2021 Ramadan season to those in need around the world. IDLIB, SYRIA, April 22, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently delivered food staples to provide 186,000 meals to internally displaced families in Northern Syria, and more are currently being delivered to families struggling with hunger and food insecurity in other countries around the world.

Approximately 500 Syrian families received donor-funded food packages to sustain them during the month of Ramadan. The majority of the food package recipients are women and children who recently settled in the Ma’arat Masrin refugee camp in Northern Syria.

The food packages, which include items such as rice, flour, lentils, canned goods and oil, were distributed for the Ramadan season, a time marked by fasting, charity and worship.

Recipients of the food packages are among the nearly 1 million Syrians who have been displaced by conflict in the past 16 months – bringing the total to over 6.7 million displaced Syrians within the country, and another 6.6 million living as refugees, according to figures from the UN. This makes Syrians the largest forcibly displaced population in the world today.

Baitulmaal provides food, water, medicine, healthcare and other aid to people in Syria, and plans to deliver 3.9M meals during the 2021 Ramadan season to those in need around the world.
