GAZA, PALESTINE, October 4, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently distributed back-to-school kits to 1,000 students in the impoverished Gaza Strip.

Each back-to-school kit includes items such as backpacks, stationary, shoes and uniforms. The kits were provided to boys and girls at UNRWA-run schools in the middle and northern Gaza governorates.

According to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, the supplies came just in time for many students who were impacted by escalating violence earlier this year.

“So many children lost everything, including all of their school supplies,” Sohail said. “Thanks to our donors, these kits give students what they need to go back to school and strive for a better future.”

Israeli airstrikes in May 2021 killed 256 civilians — including 66 children — and displaced approximately 74,000 Palestinians, according to the UN. The World Bank estimates up to $380 million in damage to Gaza’s infrastructure from 11 days of heavy bombardment. Among the impacted buildings were 50 schools that were destroyed. Approximately 4,000 students were relocated to other schools. Many continue to be at risk of missing out on an education due to financial hardship.

Facing over a half-century of occupation, Palestinians have limited access to food, water, healthcare, electricity or opportunities for education and employment, and over 80% of Gazans are in need of humanitarian assistance.

Baitulmaal has been providing humanitarian aid in Palestine since the organization’s inception. The charity operates 300 water tanks in Gaza and funds healthcare at the Yazour Clinic for underprivileged families in the West Bank. In addition to food, water, winter relief and emergency humanitarian aid, Baitulmaal also sponsors Palestinian orphans in Lebanon and Jordan. KARACHI, PAKISTAN, September 21, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently installed a water filtration system in Jamshoro, Pakistan that provides clean water to 3,570 beneficiaries.

The new filtration system replaces one that was installed in 2010 to address water quality issues after flooding in the area. The new system purifies water used by the local school and surrounding communities, benefitting approximately 2,070 students and staff as well as 1,500 additional villagers.

According to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, the local school uses approximately 1,000 liters of water per day, and the system filters more than 720,000 liters of water per year for the school and village.

“Without a filtration system, people in this village risk drinking polluted water and suffering from waterborne illnesses,” Sohail said. “This new system gives students and their families  access to clean, safe water without worrying about getting sick.”

According to UNICEF, approximately 70 percent of households in Pakistan still drink bacterially contaminated water. UNESCO estimates that 40 percent of all diseases in Pakistan are due to unsanitary drinking water. This has led to stunting in children and over 53,000 child deaths per year.

Baitulmaal has constructed over 330 donor-funded wells in various regions of Pakistan, including Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. In addition to water access projects, Baitulmaal responds to emergencies, provides food and facilitates community building and other uplifting programs.

BEIRUT, LEBANON, September 14, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently distributed emergency health kits and medical equipment valued at over $1.1 million to eight hospitals and three clinics serving more than 11,000 patients.

Two containers of medical supplies such as nebulizers, dialysis machines, surgical kits, cardiac monitors and oxygen tanks were distributed in four different regions in Lebanon: the Beirut capital, Saida to the South, Tripoli and Akkar in the North, and Sebline in the Mount Lebanon district. Facilities that received the medical distribution include:

According to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, a significant number of patients at these facilities struggle with chronic illnesses as well as acute diseases such as COVID-19.

“Hospitals are places of hope and healing,” said Sohail. “It’s just not right that people suffer or even die because a hospital runs out of oxygen or other medical supplies.”

Political instability, an ongoing pandemic, a catastrophic explosion and an influx of refugees from countries like Syria have contributed to Lebanon’s strained financial situation. The World Bank recently declared that the country is “likely to rank in the top 10, possibly top three, most severe crisis episodes globally since the mid-nineteenth century.”

Approximately 33 percent of Lebanese households do not have access to healthcare, and more than half are unable to obtain medicine, according to a UN study by the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia. Eighty-two percent of the Lebanese population has fallen into poverty since 2019 – one of the sharpest declines in modern times. The Lebanese currency has depreciated by more than 90 percent, and food prices have surged 557 percent according to the World Food Programme.

Baitulmaal was on the ground in Lebanon shortly after the August 4, 2020 explosion, helping to clear debris, feed the hungry and help the homeless. Since then, Baitulmaal reconstructed homes and buildings, installed an electric generator and water well in the Burj al-Barajneh refugee camp and provided over 2 million meals to impoverished families in Lebanon. In addition to this $1.1 million medical shipment, Baitulmaal previously sent $1.2 million in medical supplies and hard-to-find medications to hospitals in Beirut.

Baitulmaal provides food, water, medicine, healthcare and other aid to people in Lebanon. If you would like to learn more or contribute to these programs at Baitulmaal, please visit their website at Baitulmaal.org.
