COX’S BAZAR, BANGLADESH, May 5, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently delivered food staples to provide 160,080 meals to Rohingya refugees living in Bangladesh.

Around 667 Rohingya families were provided food packages at a distribution point in Cox’s Bazar. The food packages contained items such as rice, sugar, flour, lentils, potatoes, onions, carrots and oil, and were distributed for the Ramadan season, a time marked by fasting, charity and worship.

Considered “the most persecuted people in the world” by the United Nations, Rohingya fled their native Rakhine State of Myanmar to seek refuge at camp settlements in the hills of Bangladesh. Enduring discrimination and extreme poverty for decades, Rohingya now face monsoons, cholera outbreaks and rampant camp-fires in overcrowded blocks. Approximately 720,000 Rohingya live in various registered and makeshift camps in Bangladesh, and 80% of them are women and children, according to the UN.

Baitulmaal provides food, water, and other aid to Rohingya refugees, most recently responding to the devastating campfire that killed 15, injured hundreds, and displaced thousands. URGENT! Help Rohingya Impacted by Fires in Refugee Camps

COX’S BAZAR, BANGLADESH, March 24, 2021 — This past Monday, a devastating fire ripped through a densely populated campsite on the border of Bangladesh that is home to thousands of Rohingya refugees. As of this morning, at least 15 people are dead while hundreds remain missing and an estimated 45,000 have been displaced.

This is the second such fire this year alone, and the largest one yet.

Many Rohingya have lost everything — again.

We have mobilized relief efforts on the ground in Bangladesh, providing food, shelter, clothing, hygiene kits, home items and other basic necessities to victims of the blaze, and need your support now.

Because the plight of the Rohingya has only become worse.

Considered one of the most persecuted minorities in the world, nearly a million Rohingya fled their native Rakhine State in Myanmar to escape genocide and seek refuge in the hills of Southern Bangladesh.

Years of apartheid-like conditions and violent ethnic cleansing drove people from their homes with only the clothes on their back. Harboring stories of mass murder, rape, and deliberate destruction, traumatized Rohingya settled in makeshift tents that have grown into blocks of camps along the Bangladeshi border.

There are 34 such camps in Cox’s Bazar, many of which are identified by numbers, letters, or a combination of both. Rohingya in these camps face:

  • cholera outbreaks and other water-borne diseases
  • communicable diseases such as diarrhea, rashes, and lice
  • malnutrition and stunting in children (an estimated 30% of children under 5)
  • weather-related disasters such as floods and landslides, especially during monsoon seasons
  • high risk of campfires, such as one that destroyed over 500 shelters earlier this year and the recent blaze that tore through Balukhali camps 9, 10, 8E, and 8W
  • displacement after such disasters — with little belongings and nowhere to go.

The Rohingya are in desperate need of your support.

Their situation in these camps after barely surviving with their lives when fleeing violence was already bleak. Overcrowding, lack of adequate sanitation facilities, minimal access to safe drinking water and overall poverty only heightened the risk of COVID-19 within the Rohingya community in the last year — and now, what little they had is gone in an instant.

Your generous donations have helped improve the lives of Rohingya in Bangladesh, such as installing an electric tubewell to provide clean water, providing nutritious meals, and delivering winter aid, but now, they need your support as they reel from a horrible blaze that decimated everything.

Please give today. Help restore their lives, and restore their hope!

COX’S BAZAR, BANGLADESH, December 28, 2020 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently completed an emergency winter aid delivery for 500 Rohingya refugees who fled the genocide in Myanmar.

Field workers distributed 100 winter kits and 100 food packages to families struggling with hunger and cold conditions inside camps in Cox’s Bazar along the southeastern border of Bangladesh. Families with vulnerable members such as those who are chronically ill, disabled, elderly, breastfeeding or pregnant received the urgent intervention.

Three years of violence against the Rohingya in Rakhine State, Myanmar, has resulted in over 860,000 refugees fleeing into nearby Bangladesh. Living in 34 overcrowded camps in Cox’s Bazar, the Rohingya have suffered from recent flooding and COVID-19 outbreaks. Such worsening conditions have severely impacted access to food, water and health services.

Baitulmaal delivered winter aid to 930 Rohingya refugees earlier this year. Prior to that, the charity provided more than 590,000 meals and winter relief for over 15,000 Rohingya refugees as well as funding for shelters.

COX’S BAZAR, BANGLADESH, February 25, 2020 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently completed an emergency winter aid for Rohingya refugees who fled the ethnic cleansing campaign carried out by Myanmar military forces.

Field workers distributed donor-funded winter packages and food packages to 930 individuals struggling with hunger and cold conditions inside camps in the state of Cox’s Bazar along the southeastern border of Bangladesh.

“Camp tents and shelters just don’t provide adequate protection from the cold during the winter months,” said Elizabeth Sohail, Programs Manager for Baitulmaal. “The assistance our donors enable us to provide gives survivors hope as they struggle to put their lives back together.”

More than 700,000 Rohingya have fled what the United Nations has called a “textbook example of ethnic cleansing.” At least 354 Rohingya villages inside Myanmar have been burned to the ground or partially destroyed by the Myanmar military in their attempt to rid the country of all Muslims in the guide of national security.

Prior to this recent aid delivery, Baitulmaal provided more than 590,000 meals, funding for shelters and winter assistance for over 15,000 Rohingya refugees.
