MOGADISHU, SOMALIA September 12, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, is proud to announce the completion of a new school in Hobyo, Somalia that serves 150 students and their families.

The new building houses 5 classrooms, 3 restrooms, 1 kitchen, and an office. Children ages 5-15 are enrolled in the school, with orphaned children receiving priority enrollment. According to Baitulmaal program manager Elizabeth Sohail, the school will provide a safe learning environment for the students of Hobyo by day, and will also educate adults by night.

“It is an honor to be part of this project,” said Baitulmaal Executive Director Mazen Mokhtar. “The construction of this new school is a major step forward in restoring hope in Hobyo, and a testament to our commitment to ensuring that struggling communities have the opportunity to thrive.”

Hobyo was once a busy and major port city in Somalia that had deteriorated after the collapse of the central government in 1991. Since then, a myriad of crises including floods, droughts and civil unrest have impacted communities and stalled efforts to rebuild infrastructure.

Baitulmaal has been on the ground in Somalia providing humanitarian aid to those in need. In addition to building schools, Baitulmaal has mobilized drought relief efforts, provided food assistance, enabled healthcare access and promoted back to school efforts. GALKAYO, SOMALIA July 29, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed fresh meat for 11,800 meals to impoverished families in Somalia as part of the Islamic season of Udhiyah earlier this month.

Approximately 2,000 families living in Galkayo and Baidoa were given fresh meat from locally-sourced and humanely-slaughtered goats. Beneficiaries included displaced families living in camp settlements in Harhar.

In many Muslim-majority countries, fresh meat is often procured through charitable gifts on occasions like the Udhiyah, a practice that commemorates Prophet Abraham’s sacrifice and takes place during the Hajj pilgrimage.  This year, Baitulmaal distributed fresh meat for approximately 160,000 meals to beneficiaries in various poverty-stricken and conflict ridden areas of the world.

In addition to seasonal Islamic giving programs, Baitulmaal coordinates emergency aid efforts, water, hygiene and sanitation projects, orphan support programs and other humanitarian aid to under-served populations regardless of faith or nationality. MOGADISHU, SOMALIA April 27, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently delivered 930 food packages that provided 329,220 meals to impoverished families in the Mudug region of Somalia.

The food package distribution is part of Baitulmaal’s emergency drought response in East Africa. Somalia and Kenya in particular have been severely impacted by drought, leading to loss of livestock and livelihoods. The water emergency has lead to higher rates of food insecurity in the region, according to Baitulmaal program director Elizabeth Sohail.

“Many families lost entire herds of animals and with them, sources of income,” Sohail said. “Thankfully, we’ve been able to provide emergency water and food assistance especially in time for Ramadan, and we plan to continue our work here because so much more needs to be done.”

Baitulmaal delivered approximately 4 million meals to those in need around the world this past Ramadan. The charity also provides food, water, healthcare and other aid to families in East Africa. WAJIR, KENYA, December 20, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, is mobilizing drought relief efforts in affected communities in Kenya which include provision of potable water tankers and maintenance of existing sub-city wells. 

Fifty tankers are providing 1 million liters of potable water per month to five settlements in Kenya, benefitting approximately 3,500 residents. Water will be made accessible to livestock, a major source of livelihood that has been impacted by drought conditions in the region. Ten sub-city wells will also be maintained to ensure adequate supply to city residents.

Mitigating the water emergency in East Africa has been a priority in the region, said Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal.

“Without access to water, many things start to rapidly deteriorate,” Sohail said. “Disease is spread more easily, malnutrition in young children rises, and the health of the community as a whole is impacted when crops and animals fail to thrive. These water tankers are crucial right now.”

Countries in East Africa have been facing the worst drought in recent times, with an estimated 2.4 million people impacted in Kenya alone, according to the UN. The current drought has extended since December of 2020, the longest stretch in decades.

GALKACYO, SOMALIA, October 11, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently distributed school supplies and uniforms to 388 pupils in four primary schools in Somalia.

Students in four primary schools in the Galkacyo district of the Mudug region received uniforms, backpacks, stationary and other supplies. The schools are located in central Somalia including Alsha’ab and Harhar orphanage schools in Galkacyo town, Bandiradley town primary school and the Saddeh-Higlo village primary school.

According to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, some items were scarce in the region and had to be transported by air from Mogadishu to Galkacyo. Uniforms also had to be specially tailored for the students.

“Many of the students are orphans or from low-income households,” Sohail said. “These supplies enable them to overcome obstacles in pursuit of their education.”
