DALLAS, TX August 27, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently distributed fresh meat for 308,008 meals to impoverished families in poverty-stricken and conflict-ridden regions around the world during the Islamic holiday season of sacrifice known as Udhiyah.

Approximately 16,504 families received portions of meat from cows, goats and other livestock in countries such as Bangladesh, India, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Pakistan, Palestine, Somalia, Syria, Turkey and Yemen.

Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, said that while the need in these countries has been on the rise, so has the compassion of donors.

“Many of the families we help have been hit by tragedy after tragedy,” Sohail said. “Each package of meat served more than food; it also provided a glimmer of hope to those who’ve had little to look forward to in this difficult year.”

According to the United Nations, acute food insecurity has soared 40 percent this year due to conflict, climate change, rising food prices and the COVID-19 pandemic, affecting a record 270 million people. The World Health Organization estimates that more than two billion people worldwide suffer from “hidden hunger,” defined as a deficiency in nutrients such as iron, zinc, and folic acid from a lack of diversity in diets.

For those struggling with extreme poverty and food insecurity, having meat to eat is a rare occurrence. In many Muslim-majority countries, nutrient-rich meat is often procured through charitable gifts on occasions like the Udhiyah. This year, Baitulmaal distributed approximately 54 tons of fresh, locally-sourced meat on behalf of donors wishing to fulfill the Islamic traditions of sacrifice, charity, and good-will towards others.

In addition to seasonal Islamic giving programs, Baitulmaal coordinates emergency aid efforts, water, hygiene and sanitation projects, orphan support programs and other humanitarian aid to under-served populations regardless of faith or nationality. SANAA, YEMEN, May 6, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently delivered food staples to provide 703,500 meals to people in Yemen suffering from poverty and hunger.

Around 1,750 Yemeni families were provided food packages in Sanaa and Al-Hudaidah, Yemen. The food packages contained items such as flour, rice, sugar, beans, tomato paste and oil. The packages were distributed for the Ramadan season, a time marked by fasting, charity and worship.

Yemen has long been considered the “worst humanitarian crisis in the world,” and 80 percent of the population — about 24.3 million people — are now in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, according to the UN. Food insecurity and malnutrition are among the most urgent situations Yemenis face, with approximately 20 million people suffering from hunger on a daily basis. The crisis in Yemen is so dire that UN aid chief Mark Lowcock once said that “Yemenis are not ‘going hungry.’ They are being starved.”

Baitulmaal delivered 60,300 meals to Yemenis earlier this year, in addition to a $4M shipment of medicines and supplies and COVID-19 prevention assistance since the global pandemic hit. The charity also installed a $25,000 solar-powered, deep-water well in the Yahya Yousef village of Yemen’s Al-Hudaidah governorate in January.

The New York Times lists Baitulmaal among highly rated charities providing aid in Yemen. If you would like to learn more or contribute to these and other programs at Baitulmaal, please visit their website at birelief.org.

New Solar-Powered Well Gives 3,015 Yemenis Clean Water

AL-HUDAIDAH, YEMEN, January 14, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently completed the construction of a solar-powered, deep-water well that provides clean water to 3,015 people in the Yahya Yousef village of Yemen’s Al-Hudaidah governorate.

The well, which is 120 meters deep, uses solar energy to power a pump that fills two 3,000 liter tanks. Approximately 450 families now have access to uncontaminated water through multiple taps at the base of the tanks. This enables them to fill jerry cans and bottles with clean water for drinking, washing and cooking.

The $25,000 well is the first one of its kind established by the charity in the region, according to  Elizabeth Sohail, programs manager at Baitulmaal.

“Water projects are really special to our hearts,” Sohail said. “This project will go on for a long time to bless family after family and generation after generation.”

In a live-streamed update on Baitulmaal’s relief efforts in Yemen, Sohail revealed that the well was dedicated in honor of Carson Caldwell, a cross-country cyclist who embarked on a journey from Pennsylvania to California to raise awareness about the Yemen humanitarian crisis and to raise funds for emergency aid efforts through Baitulmaal.

“You can just see the effect that something so simple like water can have to people who really need it,” Carson said during the event. “It’s beautiful to know that this charity, Baitulmaal, is in these places where it’s difficult to bring aid to certain parts of the world. It’s incredible to see the work being done in Yemen and it’s such an honor to be associated with it.”

In 2000, the World Bank stated that Yemen was experiencing a “dire and worsening water situation.” Since then, conflict, climate change, a cholera epidemic and a global pandemic have left the country’s residents, many of whom are internally displaced, even more vulnerable. According to the UN, over 80% of the population relies on humanitarian aid, and more than half of the population does not have access to clean water.

Since 2018, Baitulmaal has sent over $10.4 million in aid that provided meals, antibiotics, medical supplies, winter relief, water and hygiene kits to Yemen. If you would like to learn more or contribute to the emergency aid programs at Baitulmaal, please visit their website at Baitulmaal.org.

Critical Aid Reaches Yemen: 60,300 Meals; 100 Hygiene, Winter Kits for 600 Displaced Yemenis

IBB, YEMEN, January 5, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently completed an emergency winter aid delivery to 600 internally displaced Yemenis suffering from poverty, malnutrition and disease.

Food baskets containing a month’s supply of meals were provided to 100 families who lost their shelters due to displacement in recent months. Recipients include families with edlerly, special needs, disabled, ill, pregnant or breastfeeding members. Four hundred blankets were also distributed to vulnerable families in addition to 100 hygiene kits and winter essentials.

The critical aid is in response to the deteriorating situation in Yemen, according to Elizabeth Sohail, programs manager at Baitulmaal.

“Malnutrition is worsening,” Sohail said. “COVID-19 has driven even more Yemenis from their homes, leaving them in danger from hunger and the cold unless we act quickly.”

According to the UN, one in five children are severely malnourished, and 80 percent of the population is in need of humanitarian assistance. Nearly six years of conflict has displaced an estimated 4 million Yemenis, and the International Organization for Migration reports that 100,000 people were displaced in 2020 due to continued political unrest, insecurity and COVID-19.

Since 2018, Baitulmaal has sent over $5.6 million in aid that provided meals, antibiotics, medical supplies and hygiene kits to Yemen. If you would like to learn more or contribute to the emergency aid programs at Baitulmaal, please visit their website at Baitulmaal.org.
