ADEN, YEMEN, February 9, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently completed the distribution of medications and supplies to 49 health centers serving 4,454,177 Yemenis.

This distribution, part of a shipment valued at $4.6 million, targeted hospitals, primary care centers, trauma units and pharmacies in four governorates across Yemen. The health kits provide life-saving pharmaceuticals and essential medical, surgical, orthopedic, personal care, airway, and IV therapy kits to support the health and well-being of patients in Yemen, according to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal.

“Some of these health facilities had to close their doors because they did not have the necessary equipment and supplies to keep doctors and patients safe,” Sohail said. “With these health kits, Yemenis in search of healthcare won’t be turned away in their time of need.”

Considered the worst humanitarian crisis today, Yemen is poised to be the poorest nation in the world this year, according to the UN. An estimated 24 million people out of a population of 29 million are in need of healthcare support, but less than half of Yemen’s healthcare facilities are operational.

Since 2018, Baitulmaal donors have enabled millions of dollars in medication and healthcare supplies to reach vulnerable Yemenis. Donors have also funded two solar powered deep water wells as well as emergency distributions of food, hygiene kits, and winter supplies. KABUL, AFGHANISTAN, Feb 4, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently provided merchant carts to 75 internally displaced families in Afghanistan to promote economic opportunities in the poverty-stricken region.

Families in the Kunduz province were provided carts and merchandise to help generate income after struggling with employment due to instability in Afghanistan. The charity prioritized vulnerable families with disabled members, young girls and pregnant women in order to help alleviate their difficulties and enable children to go to school.

According to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, the carts help improve the economic situation for more than 600 individuals.

“These mobile carts are enabling Afghans to rebuild their lives,” Sohail said. “We know of a few cases where the income earned through these carts have allowed families to open stores and improve economic activity in their neighborhoods.”

Economic empowerment projects are vital to stabilizing communities and improving security in the region, Sohail continued. They also enable children to remain in school rather than work to support their families.

Baitulmaal helped repatriate 350 families from Kabul to their hometowns after upheaval gripped Afghanistan in late August. More than 270,000 Afghans fled their homes since the beginning of the year, according to the UN. In total, over 4 million Afghans are displaced. A recent UN report estimates that 98 percent of the Afghan population will be living in poverty by the middle of 2022, up from a current poverty rate of 72 percent.

Baitulmaal has been working with the Afghan-American-founded Education and Occupation Committee (EOC) to address the immediate needs of Afghan families as well as implement long-term projects such as the merchant carts. KARACHI, PAKISTAN, February 1, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently delivered winter supplies to 8,000 impoverished Pakistanis in three districts impacted by winter weather.

Coats, blankets, shoes, gloves and shawls were distributed to locals in the Sujawal District in Sindh Province, Manshera District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and the Harnai District in Quetta. High levels of poverty in these areas leave many people vulnerable to frigid temperatures, according to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal.

“Some of the families we reach live in mountainous, snowy regions where it is difficult to access winter supplies and other items they may need,” Sohail said. “These supplies came in time to help them stay warm.”

Poverty rates were improving in Pakistan prior to the pandemic, but the global health crisis has since sent 2 million more Pakistanis below the poverty line, according to the World Bank. Many live in areas affected by climate crises and weather emergencies such as monsoons and earthquakes. Heavy snowfall was responsible for more than 20 deaths in Pakistan last month alone.

Baitulmaal provides food, water, medicine, healthcare, educational support and other aid to people in Pakistan. If you would like to learn more or contribute to these programs at Baitulmaal, please visit their website at birelief.org.

BEIRUT, LEBANON, January 27, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed food packages to 1,000 impoverished Lebanese, Syrian and Palestinian families in Lebanon.

Families living in Beirut, Beqaa, Saida in south Lebanon and Akkar in the north received food packages that contained staples such as rice, flour, oil, beans, lentils, pasta and sugar. According to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, recipients included widows, disabled persons or refugee families.

“Many people in Lebanon have been impacted by the economic collapse,” Sohail said. “The most vulnerable among them – the sick, old, and unemployed – simply won’t survive without humanitarian intervention, which highlights why our donors are so important to families struggling in Lebanon.”

Approximately 78 percent of the Lebanese population has fallen into poverty, according to the World Bank. A catastrophic port explosion combined with a global pandemic and political turmoil has made food and services unaffordable for a majority of Lebanon’s 6.8 million residents, including nearly half a million Palestinian refugees and 1.5 million Syrian refugees living in refugee camps in Lebanon.

Baitulmaal responded to the devastating port blast in 2020, sent $1.2 million in hard-to-find medications and another $1.1 million in medical equipment to Beirut hospitals, reconstructed homes and buildings, installed generators and wells, and provided food packages to alleviate hunger. TELL ABYAD, SYRIA, January 21, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently completed the construction of wells and renovation of school bathrooms in five camps in Tell Abyad, Syria that benefit 31,259 people, including 4,200 children.

The schools are located in five areas in northern Syria that are home to approximately 160,000 displaced Syrians. They are:

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.7″ min_height=”150px” custom_margin=”-25px||-2px|||” custom_padding=”1px||3px|50px|false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”]

  • Al Maksoura School, which serves 700 students
  • Kormaza School, which serves 950 students
  • Jahjah School, which serves 1200 students
  • Al Gurun School, which serves 800 students
[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.6.6″ min_height=”446px” custom_margin=”||0px|||” custom_padding=”1px||0px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”]

According to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, many of these schools were inoperable due to the lack of water and sanitation.

“Renovating the school facilities enables children to return to a healthy environment conducive to learning,” Sohail said. “The wells are also accessible to area residents who have been struggling with water shortages. These two improvements combine to improve the lives of displaced Syrians in Tell Abyad.”

Construction was slightly delayed due to snowfall in the region, which has impacted many of the nearly 6.7 million Syrians that are internally displaced. According to the UN, 90 percent live in poverty, and more than 70 percent are without regular access to safe drinking water. Approximately 7,000 schools have been damaged or destroyed, leaving over 2 million children out of school.

Baitulmaal has been on the ground in Syria mobilizing aid after destructive storms, delivering food, digging wells, supporting orphans, helping students and bringing joy through the distribution of zakat, clothing and gifts.
