SANAA, YEMEN, May 6, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently delivered food staples to provide 703,500 meals to people in Yemen suffering from poverty and hunger.

Around 1,750 Yemeni families were provided food packages in Sanaa and Al-Hudaidah, Yemen. The food packages contained items such as flour, rice, sugar, beans, tomato paste and oil. The packages were distributed for the Ramadan season, a time marked by fasting, charity and worship.

Yemen has long been considered the “worst humanitarian crisis in the world,” and 80 percent of the population — about 24.3 million people — are now in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, according to the UN. Food insecurity and malnutrition are among the most urgent situations Yemenis face, with approximately 20 million people suffering from hunger on a daily basis. The crisis in Yemen is so dire that UN aid chief Mark Lowcock once said that “Yemenis are not ‘going hungry.’ They are being starved.”

Baitulmaal delivered 60,300 meals to Yemenis earlier this year, in addition to a $4M shipment of medicines and supplies and COVID-19 prevention assistance since the global pandemic hit. The charity also installed a $25,000 solar-powered, deep-water well in the Yahya Yousef village of Yemen’s Al-Hudaidah governorate in January.

The New York Times lists Baitulmaal among highly rated charities providing aid in Yemen. If you would like to learn more or contribute to these and other programs at Baitulmaal, please visit their website at birelief.org.

COX’S BAZAR, BANGLADESH, May 5, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently delivered food staples to provide 160,080 meals to Rohingya refugees living in Bangladesh.

Around 667 Rohingya families were provided food packages at a distribution point in Cox’s Bazar. The food packages contained items such as rice, sugar, flour, lentils, potatoes, onions, carrots and oil, and were distributed for the Ramadan season, a time marked by fasting, charity and worship.

Considered “the most persecuted people in the world” by the United Nations, Rohingya fled their native Rakhine State of Myanmar to seek refuge at camp settlements in the hills of Bangladesh. Enduring discrimination and extreme poverty for decades, Rohingya now face monsoons, cholera outbreaks and rampant camp-fires in overcrowded blocks. Approximately 720,000 Rohingya live in various registered and makeshift camps in Bangladesh, and 80% of them are women and children, according to the UN.

Baitulmaal provides food, water, and other aid to Rohingya refugees, most recently responding to the devastating campfire that killed 15, injured hundreds, and displaced thousands. BEIRUT, LEBANON, May 4, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently delivered food staples to provide 2,211,060 meals to impoverished families living in Lebanon.

Around 8,570 families struggling with food insecurity were provided food packages in various parts of Lebanon including Beirut, Tripoli, Akkar, Al Beqaa valley and Saida city. The food packages contain items such as chickpeas, rice, pasta, sugar, flour, oil, canned goods and dates and were distributed for the Ramadan season, which is marked by fasting, charity and worship.

Over 2 million of the meals were donated by a group of activists who joined forces to fundraise for Lebanon. According to Abdallah Sheik, a Dearborn-based businessman and one of the organizers of Baitulmaal’s Lebanon Committee, the declining economic situation in Lebanon has plunged people into increasing levels of poverty.

“The value of money in Lebanon went down 90%,” said Sheik. “Let’s say the minimum wage in Lebanon is $700 a month…it becomes $70. What can you do with $70? Just imagine the agony. The people in Lebanon are hungry, and they are suffering.”

In a live-streamed fundraiser on April 25, 2021, activist and author Linda Sarsour echoed his concern and called on others to stand with the people of Lebanon in their time of need.

“The bottom line is the people of Lebanon are suffering,” Sarsour said. “The people of Lebanon deserve to live with dignity. They deserve to have basic necessities like food and like medication.”

Nine months ago today, Lebanon experienced one of the most powerful non-nuclear explosions in history. The blast, which occurred in a grain factory at the port of Beirut, killed 300, injured over 6,500, and left 300,000 homeless.

At the time, Lebanon was contending with a global pandemic during a time of political and economic turmoil. Since then, food and services have become unaffordable for a majority of Lebanon’s 6.8 million residents, where prices have risen by as much as 50% and unemployment has climbed to 35%. According to the U.N., 55% of Lebanese are now living in poverty — double the number from last year.

Lebanon is also host to refugees escaping violence in their home countries. There are nearly half a million Palestinian refugees and 1.5 million Syrian refugees living in Lebanon’s increasingly crowded camps with limited resources.

Baitulmaal was on the ground in Lebanon shortly after the blast, helping to clear debris, feed the hungry, and help the homeless. Since then, Baitulmaal has also sent $1.2 million in medical supplies and hard-to-find medications to Beirut hospitals, and began reconstructing homes and buildings.

GAZA, PALESTINE, April 22, 2021 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian relief agency, recently delivered food staples to provide 217,080 meals to impoverished families in Gaza and the West Bank, and more are currently being delivered to families struggling with hunger and food insecurity in other countries around the world.

Around 685 families suffering from extreme poverty were provided food packages so far. The food packages, which include items such as eggs, rice, pasta, cheese, oil and dates were distributed for the Ramadan season, a time marked by fasting, charity and worship.

Approximately 1.9 billion Muslims around the world observe the month of Ramadan, but many among them suffer from extreme poverty due to conflict, displacement, natural and man-made disasters, as well as other social, political and economic factors. According to the World Bank, this year saw an increase in poverty levels worldwide — the first rise in a generation of declining levels — due to the global pandemic, conflict, and climate change.

In the Gaza Strip, 1 in 3 people cannot afford nutritious food, and 80% rely on humanitarian aid, according to the UN. Beyond food insecurity, Gazans have been facing an alarming rise of coronavirus cases in the weeks leading up to Ramadan, as well as military airstrikes in the past few days, which have largely prevented families from accessing basic needs. The World Bank also warned that poverty rates will double in the West Bank due to the coronavirus pandemic and economic decline.

Baitulmaal provides food, water, medicine, healthcare and other aid to people in Palestine, and plans to deliver 3.9M meals during the 2021 Ramadan season to those in need around the world. The charity also collects and distributes zakat funds on behalf of their donors.
