IDLIB, SYRIA October 18, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently distributed school supplies to 300 displaced Syrian children living in the northern countryside of Idlib.

The students range in age from six to nine years old and will attend two schools in the Ma’arat Masrin sub-district. They were fitted for uniforms and received shoes, stationary, backpacks and other school supplies prior to the start of the 2022 / 2023 school year.

According to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, many Syrian children miss out on education due to lack of adequate funds, facilities or supplies.

“These children have grown up in the shadow of war and suffering,” Sohail said. “Thanks to our generous donors, we are able to equip students with the tools they need to succeed in school.”

“But it’s so much more than books,” Sohail continued. “Education also gives them hope.”

The Syrian crisis has left more than 6 million internally displaced and another 6 million as refugees. Around 13.4 million people living within Syria – including those who are internally displaced – are in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. Millions of children have been out of school due to poverty, displacement and destruction. Approximately 40 percent of schools have been damaged or destroyed during the course of the conflict.

Baitulmaal has been on the ground in Syria delivering food, digging wells, supporting orphans, restoring schools and preparing students for winter. To learn more about or contribute to these efforts, visit Baitulmaal.org.

KARACHI, PAKISTAN October 3, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently installed a water filtration plant in the Pakka Malana village in Pakistan that provides safe, clean water to approximately 5,000 people.

The village, which is located in the Dera Ismail Khan District in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, relies heavily on tap water for its needs, but much of that water is contaminated, according to Baitulmaal Program Manager Elizabeth Sohail.

“Many people were suffering from hepatitis, typhus, diarrhea and other water-borne diseases due to the poor quality of the water there,” Sohail said. “The community was largely impoverished and unable to afford the necessary filtration. Thanks to our generous donors, they now have access to safe, clean water.”

According to the UN, approximately 70 percent of households in Pakistan drink bacterially contaminated water. UNESCO estimates that 40 percent of all diseases in Pakistan are due to unsanitary drinking water. This has led to stunting in children and over 53,000 child deaths per year. Recent floods have further contaminated water sources, posing even greater risk to vulnerable families in need.

Baitulmaal has constructed over 330 donor-funded wells in various regions of Pakistan, including Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. In addition to water access projects, Baitulmaal responds to emergencies such as recent flooding and earthquakes, and provides food and seasonal aid. KABUL, AFGHANISTAN September 15, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently delivered emergency food and hygiene kits to 4,070 Afghans impacted by destructive floods in the Logar province of Afghanistan.

Approximately 370 families received aid provisions such as rice, flour, cooking oil and soap. The majority of recipients were women-headed households or families with disabled, injured, elderly or otherwise vulnerable members. Many of the families lost their homes due to heavy floods and suffered the loss of family members, livestock, crops, shops or cars.

The floods came at a time when families in Afghanistan were already strained by economic, social and political upheavals, according to Baitulmaal’s program manager, Elizabeth Sohail.

“Families were trying to do their best in such difficult times, but heavy rains washed away what little they had,” Sohail said. “We are grateful to be able to step in and help them get on firmer ground with the necessities they need to keep hunger and disease at bay.”

Afghans are being hit with multiple challenges. Climate change is causing devastating weather emergencies that disrupt access to food, clean water and shelter. In addition to deadly floods, Afghanistan was rocked by an earthquake in June that killed more than 1,000 people.

The war in Ukraine has also impacted food supplies. According to the World Food Programme, food prices in Afghanistan have risen nearly 40 percent over the last eight months. Human Rights Watch has also reported that 13,000 newborns have died from malnutrition and hunger-related diseases in Afghanistan since January, and 3.5 million children need nutritional support.

In addition to providing food and other aid, Baitulmaal has worked with the Afghan-American-founded Education and Occupation Committee (EOC) to evacuate Afghans and implement economic development projects. MOGADISHU, SOMALIA September 12, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, is proud to announce the completion of a new school in Hobyo, Somalia that serves 150 students and their families.

The new building houses 5 classrooms, 3 restrooms, 1 kitchen, and an office. Children ages 5-15 are enrolled in the school, with orphaned children receiving priority enrollment. According to Baitulmaal program manager Elizabeth Sohail, the school will provide a safe learning environment for the students of Hobyo by day, and will also educate adults by night.

“It is an honor to be part of this project,” said Baitulmaal Executive Director Mazen Mokhtar. “The construction of this new school is a major step forward in restoring hope in Hobyo, and a testament to our commitment to ensuring that struggling communities have the opportunity to thrive.”

Hobyo was once a busy and major port city in Somalia that had deteriorated after the collapse of the central government in 1991. Since then, a myriad of crises including floods, droughts and civil unrest have impacted communities and stalled efforts to rebuild infrastructure.

Baitulmaal has been on the ground in Somalia providing humanitarian aid to those in need. In addition to building schools, Baitulmaal has mobilized drought relief efforts, provided food assistance, enabled healthcare access and promoted back to school efforts. GAZA, PALESTINE September 6, 2022 — Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian nonprofit, recently delivered emergency food, hygiene kits, household and bedding supplies to approximately 1,024 Palestinians impacted by the assault on Gaza earlier this summer.

In addition to non-perishable food packages that contained items such as rice, pasta and canned goods, 160 families received two cooked meals a day for three days as well as bags of fresh bread. They were also provided mattresses, blankets, pillows, bathroom and other basic supplies. According to Elizabeth Sohail, program manager at Baitulmaal, many families lost everything they had after missiles struck their homes.

“Children were playing in the streets one moment and lost everything in the next,” Sohail said. “It will take months to rebuild their lives, and providing them basic necessities can help alleviate their suffering as well as let them know they have our compassion.”

Between August 5 and 7, 2022, 49 Palestinians were killed by missile attacks on Gaza, including 17 children, according to the Gaza health ministry.  Hundreds of Palestinians were wounded and hundreds more were internally displaced. This attack was the largest since the May 2021 bombardment of Gaza that left more than 250 dead, including 66 children.

In addition to the threat of attacks, Gazans face routine power outages, limited water access, food insecurity and poverty due in large part to an ongoing blockade. According to the UN, more than 75 percent of Gazans rely on humanitarian aid.

Baitulmaal provides food, clothing, education support, seasonal giving, emergency aid and healthcare in Palestine. The charity also operates 400 water tanks in Gaza .
